Behind the Scenes: Building SmartSoko – Creating East Africa's Next-Generation Delivery Platform

Background

SmartSoko was born from the need for a reliable, scalable, and modern delivery platform tailored to businesses and customers across East Africa. Existing solutions often lack flexibility, advanced analytics, and seamless integration for merchants. The vision was to create a platform that combines speed, security, and an exceptional user experience while remaining scalable for future growth.

What we did

We designed and developed the platform using a modern technology stack, including Next.js, TypeScript, Supabase, PostgreSQL, and cloud infrastructure. Development focused on creating a responsive customer interface, a comprehensive admin dashboard, secure authentication, real-time order management, payment integration, and scalable backend services. Throughout development, we continuously refined the database architecture, API design, and deployment pipeline to improve performance and maintainability.

Lessons learned

Building a production-grade platform extends far beyond writing code. Careful planning, database design, API security, testing, and deployment strategies are just as important as implementing features. We also learned the value of iterative development, where continuous testing and user feedback help identify improvements early. Finally, investing in a scalable architecture from the beginning makes it much easier to introduce new features and support future growth.
